TORONTO — American poet Roger Reeves won the $130,000 Griffin Poetry Prize with his book “Best Barbarian” at a ceremony in Toronto on Wednesday evening.The Austin, Texas-based writer is also the recipient of a Whiting Award and a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship.Griffin judges praise “Best Barbarian” for charting “the ruptures and violences enacted across time and space — particularly against Black humanity — while leaning always toward beauty.”In his acceptance speech, Reeves thanked his grandmother, who moved from South Carolina to New Jersey to clean homes, including for some of the first Black women to get PhDs in the United States.When she was cleaning those houses, he said, she’d tell her grandson to look up at the shelves.“She would say look at those shelves. Tommy Tuberville said in a tweet Wednesday that the top general in charge of U.S. Space Command told him during a meeting that Huntsville, not Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the preferred location for its new headquarters. TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) -- Lake Travis Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a 3% raise for all regular staff in a school board meeting on Thursday.In a letter sent to the LT family, it indicated all salary adjustments will become effect in July, August or September 2023, depending on the calendar start date.The letter said the raise will be calculated from the midpoint of the current year pay grade, which for teachers and librarians represents an increase of $1,920.Furthermore, the board also approved increasing the starting pay for teachers and librarians by $3,000, to $56,000, which currently ranks the district as the second-highest entry-level salary compared to its 13 neighboring districts, the letter said. LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. - Lincoln County Sheriff's Office detectives investigated skeletal remains found in an abandoned home in Winfield Wednesday. Investigators said the person was found wearing several layers of clothing but said it is still early in the investigation."We found skeletal remains of a deceased person. At this time, we can't tell the sex or age of the individual," said Capt. David Hill for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. "It's probably going to require dental records."Hill said the challenge for investigators is trying to identify the remains."As it's gotten hotter, that speeds up the decomposition process," he said.
