AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Texas is getting hotter as summer draws near, which means mosquitoes are out and about. Mosquito bites are itchy and annoying, but the insects can also pose health risks by spreading diseases and viruses like Zika, West Nile, dengue fever, encephalitis and canine heartworm. Austin Public Health (APH) said Austin-Travis County saw one case of West Nile in a patient just last year and identified six positive mosquito pools throughout the county. Greg Abbott on Sunday said he would veto a toned-down version of a bill to offer school vouchers in Texas, and threatened to call legislators back for special sessions if they don't "expand the scope of school choice" this month."Parents and their children deserve no less," he said in a statement. His dramatic declaration came the night before the House Public Education Committee was scheduled to hold a public hearing on Senate Bill 8, the school voucher bill. That measure passed the Senate more than a month ago, but has so far been stalled in lower chamber as it lacks sufficient support.The committee is set to vote Monday on the latest version of SB 8, authored by Sen. A Mahtomedi mother who testified before a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee Friday has helped families everywhere get one step closer to fighting a terminal disease that targets young boys.After Marit Sivertson and other families testified on Friday, the FDA’s Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy advisory committee voted 8 to 6 to fast-track approval of a gene therapy that she believes has changed her 9-year-old son’s life.“This is the news that our community has been advocating for and waiting for,” she said. “These boys don’t have the luxury of time. ST. LOUIS - It was another weekend of craziness in downtown St. Louis with fights and gunshots during the overnight hours. The latest episodes involved two incidents early Sunday morning. Police shared that the suspects in both cases are still at large.The first incident unfolded around 1:15 a.m. Police responded to a call for a large fight in the street with several suspects having guns in the 900 block of Locust Avenue. Officers broke up the crowd without incident, but then about 20 minutes later officers were sent to the same location for antoher street fight. Officers again dispersed the crowd, but this time they heard a barrage of gunfire nearby on the 300 block of Olive Boulevard.We're told officers ran there and found multiple people in two vehicle. Both vehicle were riddled with bullets. Police toold FOX that nine people were in the vehicles, and eight were teenagers. Several shell casings were found, but nobody was hit or injured. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - Heavy rain pounded parts of south St. Louis City and County Sunday, caused flash floods on roads and in homes.MoDOT closed Interstate-55 at Carondelet for much of the night Sunday night. The heavy rains sent the River Des Peres spilling over its banks. I-55 was also closed at Reavis Barracks, as Gravois Creek flooded the highway at Union Road. By Zoe Sottile | CNNThe world’s oldest dog is living it up in his 30s.Bobi, a Portuguese pooch who was declared the world’s oldest dog by Guinness World Records in February, celebrated his 31st birthday on Thursday, according to a news release from Guinness.Bobi’s family planned a Saturday birthday party at his home in Conqueiros, a rural village in southern Portugal.His owner, Leonel Costa, told Guinness that it will be a “very traditional” Portuguese party.
