ANTIOCH — The mayor of Antioch called a weekend shooting at a teen birthday party that killed an 18-year-old girl and wounded six others a “horrific incident” and again called for the firing of officers involved in the department’s texting scandal to free up their positions for more hiring.Mayor Lamar Thorpe released a statement early Monday, saying his “heart is with the victims and families” and insisting on swift change.“Each day these officers are on leave is another day we are prevented from having a stronger police presence on our streets to deter and/or respond to gun violence,” Thorpe added.Antioch police continued to investigate the shooting Monday. It happened on Sunset Lane near Mountaire Park about 1 a.m. Sunday. Police said uninvited guests came to the party sometime before the gunfire started.Authorities on Monday did not identify the 18-year-old girl, citing the investigation. OAKLAND — Days before a judge is expected to hand down a life sentence, the attorney for well-known transgender activist Dana Rivers has filed a new trial motion arguing that unfavorable judicial rulings, prosecutorial missteps, and a fixation on the Hells Angels denied Rivers a fair trial in her triple-murder case.Defense attorney Melissa Adams, who defended Rivers during her 2022 trial, argued in a 36-page motion that Rivers’ trial focused too much on biker gangs and not enough on evidence of strife in the marriage of two of Rivers’ three victims. Rivers was convicted of murdering Charlotte Reed, 56, her wife Patricia Wright, 57, and Wright’s 19-year-old son, Benny Toto Diambu-Wright, in a frenzied triple-shooting and stabbing that prosecutors described as gruesome overkill motivated by personal animus and a dispute involving an all-women motorcycle club known as the Deviants.“The court erred in allowing the prosecution to present evidence that the Deviants...US will rejoin UNESCO to counter China’s influence

By Angela Charlton and Matthew Lee | Associated PressPARIS — UNESCO announced Monday that the United States plans to rejoin the U.N. cultural and scientific agency — and pay more than $600 million in back dues — after a decade-long dispute sparked by the organization’s move to include Palestine as a member.U.S. officials say the decision to return was motivated by concern that China is filling the gap left by the U.S. in UNESCO policymaking, notably in setting standards for artificial intelligence and technology education around the world. The move will face a vote by UNESCO’s member states in the coming weeks. But approval seems a formality after the resounding applause that greeted the announcement in UNESCO’s Paris headquarters Monday. Not a single country raised an objection to the return of a country that was once the agency’s single biggest funder. The U.S. and Israel stopped financing UNESCO after it voted to include Palestine as a member state in 2011. ...Sharks sign 2022 first-round pick Bystedt after Swedish rookie of the year honors

The massive amounts of seaweed washing up on Florida’s shores lately are smelly, ugly and potentially deadly. In May, Florida Atlantic University researchers published a study finding flesh-eating bacteria living on a blob of microplastics and sargassum in the Atlantic Ocean that is double the width of the U.S.These bacteria can cause intestinal distress and can even result in a life-threatening condition that kills muscles, nerves and flesh and eventually causes sepsis and death. They can enter the body through open wounds or from the consumption of raw fish like oysters. This discovery is a reminder to avoid seaweed, avoid exposing open wounds to seawater and to be cautious of raw fish, said Dr. Jose Alexander, clinical microbiologist and director of microbiology, virology and immunology for AdventHealth Orlando.“Are you going to stop going to the ocean in the summer? Probably not. But if you have an open wound, try to avoid the water,” he said. “Maybe avoid [being] close to that se...Investigators hunt for cause of I-95 collapse in Philly
