FDA to test new package labels that could change how consumers make food choices (CNN) — The United States Food and Drug Administration will test out labels on the front of food packages in the hope of giving shoppers better access to nutrition information, the agency said. The goal is to address diet-related chronic disease by “empowering consumers with nutrition information to help them more easily identify healthier choices and encouraging industry innovation to produce healthier foods,” the FDA said in a recent regulatory filing. The agency hopes to enact new regulations on labels by December, according to the filing.Front of package labels would complement — not replace — traditional nutrition facts labels, with the intention of helping people with less nutritional knowledge identify foods that would be part of a healthy eating pattern, the FDA said in a June 14 statement.Nutrition might not be clear at a glanceMost people don’t have enough nutritional knowledge to get the information they need easily from nutrition facts labels, said Natalie M...

MASN: Orioles, Nationals reach agreement on some past payments, but others are headed to arbitration After more than a decade of dispute over precisely how much the Orioles and Washington Nationals each were owed by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network for 2012 to 2016, the two clubs have reached a settlement, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The network, majority-owned by the Baltimore club, will pay both teams $99.2 million, according to the person, who said the calculation of interest payments, had been among the sticking points. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because neither team had made an announcement. The settlement closes a lengthy, bitter chapter between the teams during which they disagreed over the distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars for the broadcast rights to each teams’ games. But it does not necessarily end the quarrel between the clubs.Going forward, they must agree on how much each are owed beyond 2016. That determination is to be made by a Major League Baseball arbitration panel that has not yet convened a hearing on the ma...

Tyler Wells’ ugly second inning dooms Orioles in 7-2 loss to Rays as teams split series The Rays nearly overcame a large deficit Tuesday with a four-run inning. On Wednesday, a four-run second was all they needed to beat the Orioles.Baltimore starting pitcher Tyler Wells had a disastrous second inning — allowing two home runs and committing two errors — and the Orioles’ bats couldn’t mount a comeback in a 7-2 loss.A day after tallying 10 hits and eight runs, the Orioles managed just four hits, struggling to square up rookie starter Taj Bradley or Tampa Bay’s lights-out bullpen. The lone offense of the afternoon came on solo home runs to straightaway center field from Ramón Urías in the third inning and Gunnar Henderson in the ninth.Baltimore (45-27) and the MLB-best Rays (52-25) end the two-game series at Tropicana Field with a split. The Orioles are five games back of Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East. The two solo home runs Wells surrendered in the second continued a concerning trend amid his impressive campa...

Movie review: ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ looks (and sounds) the part but isn’t exhilarating

Movie review: ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ looks (and sounds) the part but isn’t exhilarating “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” debuted in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received what could kindly be described as a tepid response from critics.Based on a recent advanced screening of the fifth and, supposedly, final film in the beloved series dating to 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” it’s pretty easy to say “Dial” isn’t some horrendous “Indiana Jones” adventure. But, alas, it isn’t a particularly strong one, either. It’s as if talented filmmaker James Mangold — taking the reins from franchise director Steven Spielberg — set out to make a convincing forgery of an “Indiana Jones.”Aside from Spielberg, all the requisite ingredients are there, from Harrison Ford in the titular role — wearing his leather jacket and fedora and occasionally cracking that iconic whip — to an archeological treasure to scheming Nazis to one last rousing score from the great John Williams. And yet the affair constantly feels a little off, starting with the action-packed first act set 25 y...

Outlook bleak for passengers on the Titan, despite massive rescue effort By MARK PRATT (Associated Press)BOSTON (AP) — Time is quickly running out in the search for a missing submersible that lost contact with its mother ship on Sunday as it descended to the wreck of the Titanic with five people aboard. As an international fleet of surveillance vessels and aircraft forges ahead with ongoing search and rescue efforts, each passing second makes it less likely that the passengers on the Titan will be found alive as their oxygen supply is expected to run out by Thursday morning.Even if the Titan is located in the North Atlantic, it could be nearly impossible to reach if it is stuck on the ocean floor at roughly 12,500 feet (3,800 meters) near the Titanic’s wreckage. The five people on board are pilot Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, the company leading the expedition; British adventurer Hamish Harding; Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, a father and son from a prominent Pakistani family; and French undersea explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Narg...
