Wolfgang Schäuble, former German finance minister, longstanding senior lawmaker and a key figure behind Berlin’s controversial austerity push during the eurozone financial crisis, has died at the age of 81.Schäuble, a member of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1965, “fell asleep peacefully at home with his family” on Tuesday evening after a long, serious illness, his family told German press agency DPA. CDU leader Friedrich Merz expressed his grief in a post on X, writing: “I am losing the closest friend and advisor I have ever had in politics.”Schäuble, who was born 1942 in Freiburg in southwestern Germany, started his political career during his law studies and entered the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, in 1972, in which he had continuously served, making him the most senior German lawmaker at the time of this death. A man walking two Dalmatians at an apartment complex in Brighton early Wednesday morning when the group was approached by four coyotes.According to the dogs’ owner, Jane Freedlander, her friend was walking the two dogs, named Deanna and Tasha, when the coyotes ran up behind the dogs and attacked.The Dalmatians, a breed often used as guard dogs, fought off the pack of predators until they fled back towards the Newton Commonwealth Golf Course.“The younger one, Deanna, bit one of the coyotes in the neck and that one, which was making the frontal attack, ran off and its packmates that were trying to get behind also ran off.”Freedlander said coyotes have been a problem on the golf course and the city has not done anything to address the problem.“We’ve seen coyotes in the past but they’ve never been so bold as they have been tonight,” Freedlander said. “It’s pretty upsetting to see a coyote attack in the city of Boston. BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — The death toll from a massive fire at a guesthouse in Romania rose to seven people Wednesday morning, including at least two children, authorities said.Emergency intervention teams were deployed to the blaze that erupted Tuesday morning in the village of Tohani in Prahova county, where 26 people were staying at the guesthouse, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.
