Stock market today: Wall Street is mixed as the pressure keeps mounting from the bond market

NEW YORK (AP) — A sluggish day for stocks on Monday is keeping September on track to be the worst month of the year for Wall Street. The S&P 500 was 0.1% lower in early trading, coming off its worst week in six months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 73 points, or 0.2%, at 33,890, as of 9:53 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was virtually unchanged.Stocks have struggled recently as the realization sinks in that the Federal Reserve will likely keep interest rates high well into next year. The Fed wants to ensure high inflation gets back down to its target, and it said last week it will likely cut interest rates in 2024 by less than traders expected. Its main interest rate is already at its highest level since 2001.A growing understanding that rates will stay higher for longer has pushed yields in the bond market up to their highest levels in more than a decade. That in turn makes investors less willing to pay high prices for all kinds of investments, particular...European teams are winning the big contests at the Rugby World Cup. That means times are a-changin’

Three results in less than three weeks at the Rugby World Cup have jolted the sport and given the biggest indication in 20 years that times are a-changin’.Rugby is the antithesis of soccer when it comes to where the power lies at the World Cup. Europe and the northern hemisphere has won just one World Cup, two decades ago when England went against the grain. That larger picture of failure at rugby’s pinnacle has bred much discontent up north, where the game was invented and where the richest leagues are. It’s given the upstarts from the south years of bragging rights, which they’ve gleefully taken. But this Rugby World Cup in France may be the point around which it pivots after the northern hemisphere struck not one, not two, ...Seeing smoke in Lakewood? The commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Viktor Sokolov, died in Ukraine’s barrage on occupied Crimea last week, Kyiv said Monday. “After the defeat of the headquarters of the Russian armed forces, 34 officers died, including the commander of the Russian armed forces. Another 105 occupiers were wounded. The headquarters building cannot be restored,” Ukraine’s special operations forces said Monday. In an initial statement after the attack, the Russian defense ministry said it had shot down five incoming missiles and only one serviceman was killed, though the fleet’s headquarters were damaged. But rumors about Sokolov’s death circulated online and Ukraine jumped Monday at the chance to confirm the speculation. POLITICO has not independently verified the claims. The attack was the latest in Ukraine’s quest to liberate occupied Crimea, which Russian President Vladimir Putin seized in 2014.
