LONDON — Sitting forward, his eager schoolboy grin flashing as he laughed too hard at Elon Musk’s jokes, the message from Britain’s Prime Minister was clear: We love you.Rishi Sunak’s one-on-one with the enfant terrible of technology at a glitzy venue on a cold November night in central London drew the curtain on a week that had cemented his credentials as a Big Tech advocate. He had spent the previous day rubbing shoulders with leading tech executives like OpenAI’s Sam Altman at his landmark AI safety summit in Bletchley Park, even posing for a family portrait with them. But for a man seemingly intent on courting Big Tech and pitching Britain as the next Silicon Valley, his government has sometimes seemed intent on ruining the love-in.This week, lawmakers in the U.K.’s second chamber have debated updates to the country’s Investigatory Powers Act — a sweeping digital surveillance regime dubbed the snoopers’ charter — that have Silicon Valley heavyweights up in arms.Apple, which...Howie Carr: Mayor dreaming of a non-white Christmas

The most important question about Mayor Michelle Wu’s no-whites-allowed Christmas party at the Parkman House Wednesday night is obvious:What if the reverse had happened – what if a white mayor had held a whites-only party at a city-owned building, after specifically disinviting all the non-white members of the City Council?Related ArticlesOpinion Columnists | Poll: What’s your opinion of Boston’s ‘electeds of color’ party? We all know the answer to that question. It would have been the end of the world, a national story for days if not weeks on end. On the night of the party, there would have been rioting, or looting and violence. Or should I say, more looting and violence than usual. And if it had been a white Republican mayor who had hosted it, every GOP politician in the nation down to the candidate for tree warden in Athol would have been asked to denounce it.But since it was Wu Klux Klan gathering, we were told, as always, nothing to see h...Deadly SR-905 crash near border prompts temporary lane closures

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Suspected members of a separatist group killed 11 people and injured several others in a nighttime attack on a police station in southeastern Iran, state TV said Friday. The deputy governor of Sistan and Baluchistan province, Ali Reza Marhemati, said senior police officers and soldiers were killed and injured in the 2 a.m. attack in Rask town, about 1,400 kilometers (875 miles) southwest of Tehran. He said police killed several of the attackers in a shootout.State TV blamed the attack on Jaish al-Adl, a separatist group. In 2019, Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing on a bus that killed 27 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard force. In recent months, militants and small separatist groups in the predominantly Sunni region have attacked police stations as part of a low-level insurgency against the government.Sistan and Baluchestan province is one of the least developed areas of Iran. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Liberals are calling for former President Donald Trump’s Wisconsin lawyer to step down from a state judicial ethics panel, saying he is unsuitable due to his role advising the fake Republican electors who admitted to taking part in an effort to overturn the 2020 election.Jim Troupis, a former judge, was deeply involved in Trump’s efforts to overturn Wisconsin’s 2020 election results. He remains a defendant in a lawsuit filed against him, Trump’s attorney Ken Chesebro and the 10 fake Republican electors. The electors agreed to a settlement in the lawsuit, but Troupis and Chesebro remain defendants.Troupis has been a member of the Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee since 2020. The committee is charged with giving formal opinions and informal advice to judges and judicial officers related to the code of judicial conduct. The advice involves whether possible actions would be in compliance with the state’s judicial code of conduct. The committ...Jordan Kyrou brought to tears after boos, clarifies previous remarks on Craig Berube

ST. LOUIS - A time of transition for the St. Louis Blues has proven especially tough for 25-year-old forward Jordan Kyrou, who was brought to tears Thursday after a barrage of boos in the first game after a major coaching change. Earlier on Thursday, Kyrou spoke one-on-one with The Athletic's Blues beat writer Jeremy Rutherford and delivered a comment that caught attention on social media. Rutherford asked Kyrou about former head coach Craig Berube, who was fired Tuesday after six seasons and coaching the Blues to their first and only Stanley Cup title in 2019. According to Rutherford, Kyrou offered the following remarks Thursday afternoon on his relationship with Berube: "I've got no comment. He's not my coach anymore."Hours later, Kyrou dressed for his first game under interim head coach Drew Bannister. And it appeared fans caught on to Kyrou's comment from earlier in the day. He was met with loud boos just moments before the game during the Blues' pregame introductions. Kyrou end...EU negotiators secure agreement at COP28 to accelerate the global transition away from fossil fuels and triple renewables and double energy efficiency this decade
