YELLOWKNIFE — The Northwest Territories Power Corporation has been fined $200,000 for contravening the territory’s Safety Act after a worker died from injuries he sustained at a Yellowknife power plant in 2021.Michael Chinna, who was in the fourth year of his apprenticeship as a power systems electrician, was hit by falling ice outside an entrance at the Jackfish Lake diesel plant on March 5 that year. Another employee found him outside on the ground unconscious and bleeding from his ears, says an agreed statement of facts in the case.Chinna, 39, was taken to hospital in Yellowknife then sent to Edmonton where he died in hospital on March 14. An investigation by the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut determined melted snow had fallen down a hole in an eavestrough at the diesel plant, causing ice to build up on the west side of the building. UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The first U.N. independent investigator to visit the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay said Monday the 30 men held there are subject “to ongoing cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment under international law.” The investigator, Irish law professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, said at a news conference launching her 23-page report to the U.N. (AP) — Jim Crown, an executive and philanthropist who recently announced an effort to rally other business leaders to help fight violent crime in Chicago, died Sunday in a car crash on a racing track in Colorado. CHICAGO -- The Chicago Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing 21-year-old who has been diagnosed with autism.Tyreik Avants, 21, was last seen near the intersection of 41st Avenue and Drexel Boulevard in Chicago's Oakland neighborhood on Monday, June 26. CHICAGO — Chicago police seek a male following his alleged involvement in an armed robbery on the CTA Blue Line, the department said Monday.Mass Transit detectives are seeking the public's help in identifying the suspect seen on surveillance video robbing a 68-year-old victim in the 600 block of S. (The Hill) - Four "analog astronauts" are venturing on a simulated mission to Mars to help NASA scientists understand human dynamics on long-duration missions. On Sunday, Kelly Haston, Ross Brockwell, Nathan Jones and Anca Selariu entered a mock Martian base at the U.S. space agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston, where they will spend the next 12 months living like a crew of astronauts would on a deep space mission. As the first of three planned Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) missions, the participants will be remotely observed by scientists as part of an effort to plan for future human missions on the real Martian surface. Officials said the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. in the 5500 block of Delta Post Drive.
