Judy Collins hits the stage at Campbell’s Heritage Theatre Singer/songwriter Judy Collins will highlight her 55th release, “Spellbound,” May 10 at Campbell’s Heritage Theatre. For the first time in her six-decade career, Collins wrote all 13 songs on the album, which came out in February 2022.“They say after the plague came the Renaissance,” Collins says with a good-natured laugh, referencing the pandemic. “The truth is, I didn’t do an album like this sooner because I had other projects on my mind. This album was necessary for me to keep creative; it was the next piece of the puzzle.“Now felt like the perfect time to make this record because after all that’s happened in the world, we need something beautiful and inspirational to lift us up.”Collins took up songwriting since 1966 after Leonard Cohen asked her why she hadn’t yet done so. Her response was to sit down at her Steinway that same day and write, “Since You’ve Asked.”“Spellbound” is dedicated to folk legends Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. The track “So Alive” documents the 1960s folk...

‘Big Red Chair’ reconnects Willow Glen artist with loved ones Willow Glen artist and retired San Jose City College art professor Eve Page Mathias got her inspiration for a series of portraits from an overstuffed red chair in her living room that her dog Luna enjoyed sitting on while she looked out the window. When Luna passed away and the chair got old, Mathias moved it into her art studio as a reminder of friends she cherished. The red chair eventually became a symbol, she says, of where she was during the pandemic. COVID gave her time to reflect on herself and to look forward to seeing absent friends and colleagues.“Now, when I ask someone to sit in the red chair,” says Mathias, “it connects the dots between those missing moments when I was separated from my friends and loved ones.”The resulting 19 portraits will be exhibited as “The Big Red Chair Project” May 6-Aug. 13 at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. Each acrylic painting is done in bold colors on a 5-foot-by-4-foot canvas.“What (Mathias) offers are vibrant, painterly portraits of...

Adam Yates wins Tour de Romandie; Gaviria gets stage victory GENEVA (AP) — Adam Yates retained his yellow jersey to complete victory Sunday in the six-day Tour de Romandie for his biggest win in more than two years. Yates’ solo ride in the mountains Saturday to win the queen stage had created a 19-second lead over Matteo Jorgenson of the United States. The English rider maintained that gap by finishing safely in the pack of a sprint that decided the final stage. The stage win Sunday went to Fernando Gaviria who raced several bike lengths clear of the chasing pack on the lakeside finish in Geneva. “We controlled the race perfectly today,” said Yates, who races for the same UAE team as two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar. “It’s been a perfect week for us, we had two stage wins.”The Romandie race through the French-speaking region of Switzerland is a traditional warmup for the Tour de France though it was skipped this year by the expected main contenders in July. Williams, Harrison, Maye are top prospects in 2024 NFL draft

Williams, Harrison, Maye are top prospects in 2024 NFL draft The 2024 NFL draft class could quickly transform losers into winners. With a full season of college football still to be played, two future franchise quarterbacks are already being penciled into the top of draft boards: Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams of Southern California and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.Conventional wisdom is that both would grade out higher than Alabama’s Bryce Young, who went No. 1 overall to the Carolina Panthers last Thursday night in Kansas City, Missouri.Things can change, of course, but barring injuries the top prospects in 2024 should include two QBs, a wider receiver with Hall of Fame bloodlines, a couple of foundational left tackles and several Alabama defensive players.A way-too-early look at how the 2024 draft could play out:1.
