Gov. Abbott delivers keynote address at DPS graduation ceremony, mentions recent APD partnership AUSTIN (KXAN) –  Gov. Greg Abbott delivered Friday a keynote address at the Texas Department of Public Safety graduation ceremony, where 60 new troopers were honored for completing their 29-week training programs. In Abbott’s address, he talked about tasks they will perform and exalted the new troopers for being “tougher” than ever. He also spoke about the need for flexibility, referencing the recent partnership between the Austin Police Department and DPS to address APD’s staffing shortages.  "We made an agreement between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the City of Austin to get crime under control in the state's Capital City. The fact is there were too many murders, too much violent crime taking place. And it required us, as a state, to tap into your mission to ensure public safety. Even if it comes from the Texas Department of Public Safety, as opposed to local law enforcement. But there are times like this when we must work together,” Abbott said at the cerem...

In deal for property tax relief, Democrats look again to make TABOR refunds equal

In deal for property tax relief, Democrats look again to make TABOR refunds equal Lower-income Coloradans will see a boost to their tax rebates next year under a new bill aimed at smoothing the passage of a property tax relief proposal that had drawn criticism for not benefiting the state’s renters. The plan to flatten rebates under the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, introduced Saturday, would hinge on voters passing a proposal in November aimed at blunting spiking property taxes. It would be a similar policy to the one that led to most taxpayers receiving $750 checks, or $1,500 if they filed jointly, at the end of last summer. If this proposal fails, TABOR rebates likely would return to the six-tier mechanism that returns more money to higher-income Coloradans.Under the proposal, Coloradans earning up to $50,000 a year would earn about $200 more on their rebates, said Rep. Chris deGruy Kennedy, the Lakewood Democrat sponsoring the bill. Earners making $50,000 to $100,000 would make about $50 more, he said. Those figures double for couples, he said.Under c...

Villa was eighth, a point behind Brighton, having played three games more.Villa’s best chance of finding a leveller came with 19 minutes remaining when Douglas Luiz’s free kick dropped for Tyrone Mings six yards out, only for the defender to volley over.___More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub...

Man City and Haaland avoid scare ahead of Real Madrid clash MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City and Erling Haaland got a wake up call they didn’t know they needed before their Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid. The Norwegian goal machine has hardly put a foot wrong this season. But against Leeds on Saturday he allowed himself a moment of indulgence which almost backfired on the defending English Premier League champions.Cruising with a 2-0 lead at Etihad Stadium, Haaland passed up the chance to score a late penalty by handing over the duty to Ilkay Gundogan, who was on for a hat trick. Gundogan hit the post and Leeds scored a minute later to set up an uncomfortable finish in a match that City totally dominated.City won 2-1, but against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, such a lapse in judgement could prove much more costly.A miffed Pep Guardiola made sure City took the lesson on board.“Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he has to take it,” the manager said. “If Gundo scores ever...
