Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order Thursday directing state officials to prepare a plan to keep the state’s four national parks open through a potential government shutdown, days before their potential closure. With Republican infighting so far thwarting any congressional budget deal, the federally managed parks in Colorado — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Rocky Mountain National Park — will close just after midnight on Sunday, Polis wrote. That could happen on a particularly busy weekend for Rocky Mountain during leaf-peeping season.Polis’ order directs the state’s Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to develop a plan and identify potential funding needs to keep the parks open through a federal shutdown.State officials here and elsewhere have worked to keep parks open through shutdowns before. In 2013, the National Park Service reached a deal with Colorado off...

But at the same time, going back, that nostalgia, it’s a rival to me now and I can’t wait to tear up Folsom.”In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Rice, the son of NFL Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice, fl...

Rookie Luis Medina snapped out of a slump Thursday and looked more like the starting pitcher the Oakland A’s envisioned when they acquired him from the New York Yankees a little over a year ago.In perhaps the 24-year-old’s best start this season, Medina retired 15 of his first 19 batters and held the AL Central Division-champion Minnesota Twins to just one run in six innings in Oakland’s 2-1 victory.Fellow A’s rookie Ryan Noda provided the difference in the game, hitting a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning. In his three previous September starts, Medina had given up 16 runs in 17 innings. But he ended his first season in the majors by getting out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the sixth. Medina had issued a walk, allowed a single to ex-Giant Donovan Solano and hit a batter. But a double play followed by a groundout got the right-hander out of the inning.Medina gave up just three singles while equaling his season-high by working six innings.“I think it was one of his best (...
