Access to a common abortion pill mifepristone will remain unchanged through at least Friday after the Supreme Court extended its brief pause until the end of the workweek.Justice Samuel Alito, who handles emergency requests from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, announced the move in a brief order, extending the administrative pause until Friday at 11:59 p.m. EDT.The order doesn’t give any indication of how the high court will proceed; it effectively gives the justices a few more days to decide whether they will pause a ruling that would roll back access to the drug. The Biden administration and the company that manufactures a brand name version of mifepristone have asked the high court to intervene and pause a ruling from U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk earlier this month.Kacsmaryk’s decision suspended the Food and Drug Administration’s 23-year-old approval of mifepristone, ruling that the agency’s approval process was improperly rushed and resulted in an unsafe drug regi...Heavy fire breaks out at Jamestown Mall

Wider changes to the sporting and business sides were announced Monday and Wednesday in a pivot towards what the team will look like following the 2026 FIFA World Cup on North American soil. For the team’s new president, Smith, the changes have been a long time coming with a plan to build out to every corner of the team for over a year, with over 30 new positions.“We’ve been able to take our time here and really take a deep dive of asking what the club is going to need to best position itself,” Smith told The Post Wednesday. “Then, thanks to the support of ownership we’ve been able to execute that and it puts us in a great spot for what’s going to be an exciting time for soccer in the United States.”Among the noteworthy change...Rockies’ Austin Gomber admits being centerpiece in Nolan Arenado trade weighs on him

Austin Gomber is still figuring out who he is in purple pinstripes, aside from being known as the pitcher the Rockies traded Nolan Arenado for.Four starts into 2023, in a quiet clubhouse after Gomber got shelled for nine runs in two innings in the Rockies’ eighth straight loss, Gomber admitted that being a centerpiece in the Arenado trade weighs on him more than he’d like.“I’m kinda searching for (my own identity) right now,” Gomber said. “In the past, I tried not to worry about (being attached to Arenado), and I think I was better at that earlier on when I was here. But the longer I’ve been here (the harder it gets). Because when (the trade) first happened, I didn’t understand the magnitude of it here.“So I’m trying to keep those thoughts out of my head and not trying to put pressure on myself when I don’t need to. I’m not trying to be (Arenado). I’m just trying to be myself, but I feel like I’m hav...ACLU says inmates are held in 'abhorrent' conditions at Los Angeles County jails

A U.S. district judge is hearing arguments on Wednesday over what attorneys say at "abhorrent" conditions at Los Angeles County jails.Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claim the county has failed to provide basic rights to inmates including sanitation and healthcare. They're asking the judge to hold the county and the sheriff’s department in contempt of court and order sanctions. The ACLU said people are supposed to be in the jail system’s inmate reception centers for less than 24 hours before being transferred but are instead being held in “abhorrent” conditions.Judge Dean Pregerson heard arguments from attorneys representing the ACLU, National Prison Project, and the ACLU of Southern California on behalf of L.A. County inmates.During visits to the inmate reception center, ACLU attorneys said they recorded unacceptable conditions including mentally ill inmates being “chained to chairs for days at a time.”ACLU claims that despite an order for the sheriff’s depar...Dazzling dose of Miller time can’t save Athletics in loss to Cubs

OAKLAND — Mason Miller was electric as advertised, but the Athletics remain in a state of system-wide failure. The buzz created by the rookie right-hander had worn off by the time the Chicago Cubs beat the A’s 12-2 Wednesday at the Coliseum before a crowd of 12,112, much of it there to see the visiting team. The loss completed an 0-6 homestand, just the second winless homestand of six or more games at the Coliseum since the club moved West in 1968. The other came last season.
