Published Mon, 23 Dec 2024 15:20:30 GMT
A lawsuit challenging San Jose’s new law requiring gun owners to carry liability insurance has suffered a major blow after a federal judge dismissed nearly all the claims by pro-gun groups. The new law, which was passed by the city council last year, faced immediate lawsuits by the Colorado-based National Association for Gun Rights and the state’s Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which argued it was unconstitutional, burdensome and that San Jose hadn’t proven it would reduce gun violence. The city is the first in the entire country to impose such rules on gun owners and its supporters contend that the requirements will encourage safer firearm handling. In the ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman said the city “had demonstrated that the Insurance Requirement is consistent with the Nation’s historical traditions.”Freeman will allow the plaintiffs to file an amended complaint regarding the city’s provision requiring a yearly fee paid ...Warriors’ Curry leads Tahoe golf tournament after Day 1 highlighted by his long-distance putt

Steph Curry celebrating a made shot before it goes in is always fun in basketball. And, as we learned Friday, it’s fun to see on the golf course, too. Thanks in part to draining a sensational twisting-and-turning birdie putt on the 12th hole, Curry ended the first round of the three-day American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament on the shores of Lake Tahoe at the very top of the leaderboard.Curry’s approach shot on the par-3 12th left him about 40 feet from the hole and up on a ridge. But the basketball sharpshooter displayed some finesse on the golf course, hitting his putt away from the hole and letting it ride the groove of the ridge straight into the cup. This putt by Steph is unreal pic.twitter.com/ds8YyWPxYw— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) July 14, 2023On the Peacock broadcast, Curry was seen walking away from the putt and didn’t even look as the ball went into the hole, displaying the same prescient sense that he so often shows on the basketball court.While...A law protects Contra Costa County’s dwindling greenspace–but officials are ignoring it

Contra Costa County, once brimming with orchards and ranchlands, is now turning a distinct shade of gray: dotted with cities, highways and encroaching developments. One of the only mechanisms to slow the growing sprawl is a little-known law that provides tax relief to landowners who commit to keeping their land for open space or agricultural use.The state law, known as the Williamson Act, passed in 1965 in the face of heavy development across California. It was meant to discourage “premature and unnecessary conversion of open space to urban use,” even as the state grew and modernized. In Contra Costa, however, the program has essentially been mothballed, with potentially serious consequences for open space in the county, a civil grand jury report found.“Basically it keeps your property taxes lower so you can produce your product and not go out of business,” said Sue Russo, manager of the Alameda County Farm Bureau–a local nonprofit working to promote the protection of farms, forests a...Latest news
