COLOMBES, France — Late weekend afternoons in July are usually prime time for social meet-ups and busy café tables in the pedestrian streets of Saint-Denis, the heart of local life in Colombes. But this weekend, terraces emptied early on Saturday as handymen hastily nailed up wooden planks on shop windows. After riots raged through the streets of this Paris suburb for three straight nights, Colombes Mayor Patrick Chaimovitch declared a night curfew starting Saturday evening, and scheduled to last until Tuesday morning. Many other municipalities have taken similar measures.Colombes is a diverse town of 80,000 — home to both well-off young professionals and multi-racial, poorer communities. It borders Nanterre, where 17-year-old Nahel was shot dead by the police last Tuesday. Like in many suburban towns in the Paris region and beyond, the wave of violence that followed has left inhabitants stunned.Standing next to Chaimovitch in front of a local retailer on Saturday, Julien Beaussier, ...Russia targets Kyiv with overnight drone strike, first in nearly two weeks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Twitter owner Elon Musk has limited the amount of tweets that most users can view each day — restrictions he described as an attempt to prevent unauthorized scraping of potentially valuable data from the social media platform. The site is now requiring people to log on to view tweets and profiles — a change in its longtime practice to allow everyone to peruse the chatter on what Musk has frequently touted as the world’s digital town square since buying it for $44 billion last year. The restrictions could result in users being locked out of Twitter for the day after scrolling through several hundred tweets. Thousands of users complained Saturday of not being able to access the site.In a Friday tweet, Musk described the new restrictions as a temporary measure that was taken because “we were getting data pillaged so much that it was degrading service for normal users!”Musk has pushed back on what he calls misuse of Twitter data to train popular artificial intelligenc...Baltimore mass shooting kills 2 victims with 28 injured including 3 critically, police say

Dear Amy: I had a 42-year career as a speech-language pathologist, working with young children. Early childhood development was my professional specialty.I made sure to provide my own children with play-based preschool opportunities. As they grew and showed interest in certain activities, we provided those opportunities for them in art, music and sports. Both children are now successful professionals. Our son and his wife are the parents of two children, ages 3 and 1.They let us know early on that they would accept no input or support, even when they shared their struggles and challenges. The House of Representatives released the first report from its ESG Working Group in late June, highlighting priorities for the rest of the 118th Congress and making clear that Republicans won’t stop “investigating” environmental, social, and governance investing while there’s still a chance to save polluting companies from having to report their actual emissions. At its core, ESG is about information: When companies report on their environmental, social, and governance risks, which can range from high greenhouse gas emissions to particular hiring practices, investors use that information to determine whether they think a company is a good investment. The Republican-led House isn’t the only entity that’s become obsessed with ESG investing over the past two years. From political advocacy organizations like the Texas Public Policy Foundation to state treasurers, the American Legislative Exchange Council and the Republican Attorneys General Association, the right wing has been on fire ab...Latest news
