NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a hint of a predicament 35 minutes into his U.S. Open quarterfinal against Alexander Zverev on Wednesday night. At 3-all in the first set under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Zverev earned the first break points of the match. An opening. An opportunity to gain an early edge against the defending champion. And then — poof! — gone. Alcaraz dismissed those chances to hold, then gained a break himself in the next game by depositing an overhead that bounced into the stands. One more service hold arrived and, just like that, the set belonged to Alcaraz, as did, eventually, a spot in the semifinals. The top-seeded Alcaraz pushed aside Zverev 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and moved a step closer to becoming the first man to win consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer collected five in a row from 2004-08.Perhaps the 12th-seeded Zverev, a 26-year-old German who was the runner-up at the 2020 U.S. Open, was feeling the after-effects of his 4-...Tigers pitcher Matt Manning’s right foot broken on 119.5 mph comebacker by Giancarlo Stanton

NEW YORK (AP) — Detroit pitcher Matt Manning’s right foot was broken Wednesday night when he was hit by a 119.5 mph comebacker off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton in the Tigers’ 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees. The 25-year-old right-hander will miss the rest of the season. He missed 2 1/2 months this year after being hit on the foot by a comebacker off the bat of Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk.“I was just annoyed that it was the same foot, same spot basically,” Manning said. “There are really no positives out of this. It’s unlucky. It happens. I guess pretty cool to get hit by an MVP. I don’t know.”Stanton’s hardest-hit ball this season rebounded off Manning’s foot, struck the pitcher on the backside and was gloved by Manning, who threw to first for the final out of the first inning. Manning immediately was attended to by an athletic trainer and manager A.J. Hinch, who said it was a different spot.Manning was struck by Kirk’s 97.3 mph comebacker on April 1...Andrew Vaughn has double, homer, 2 RBIs and two runs scored as White Sox beat Royals 6-4

Elvis Andrus had four hits, and Yoan Moncada and Oscar Colas also went deep for the White Sox.“We’ve got some guys who’ve got some talent,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said. “They’ve got to stay away from the ground. There’s no money in the ground. We’ve got to put the ball in the air. Crooked numbers happen when you get the ball up in the air and you’ve got that kind of pop.”Chicago starter Touki Toussaint (3-7) gave up two runs and two hits with six strikeouts over six innings. Bryan Shaw got the last three outs for his second save of the season.“I think I was just executing pitches when I needed to,” Toussaint said. “I don’t think anything particularly was working.
