EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State coach Mel Tucker hopes he doesn’t have this long of an offseason ever again. The Spartans fell short of being eligible for a bowl last year — a season after winning 11 games — in a fall marred by a melee in Michigan Stadium’s tunnel and were humbled. “Sometimes you have to get beat up and get your face kicked in before you can really lay the true foundation — and that’s happened,” Tucker said. “I know our guys are going to comepte, and fight. We have a chip on our shoulder and we know the areas we need to improve.“We addressed a lot in recruiting. We have a lot to prove. Going through a season like that can build character.”Tucker will wrap up spring practice Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium, where fans will watch a 15-period practice that will include first-string offensive players scrimmaging against the team’s top defense.Entering his fourth year of leading the program, the 2021 Big Ten Coach of the Year ...Denver police officer injured during disturbance

(CNN) — More storms could strike South Florida on Friday after monumental flooding wreaked havoc on Fort Lauderdale and surrounding communities, closing schools and government buildings and sending hundreds of residents to seek refuge at emergency shelters. Many streets turned into lakes across Fort Lauderdale Wednesday and Thursday when a historic volume of rain exceeding 2 feet inundated the South Florida coastal city. The flooding shut down the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which is expected to reopen Friday at 9 a.m., the airport said.Surrounding areas were also lashed with well above a foot of rain, leading to rapid flooding that trapped residents, made driving miserable for motorists and frustrated air travelers who could not leave the airport.Jeremy Ennis, who said he has been working in Fort Lauderdale for about 23 years, was stuck on a city road in his car Thursday as water levels remained high.“Never have I seen anything like this, ever,”...Germany’s Baerbock warns China that war over Taiwan would be a ‘horror scenario’

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Friday warned China to de-escalate tensions over Taiwan, warning that a war in the region would have disastrous consequences for the whole world. The remarks by the German Green party heavyweight also reiterate a significant distancing of Berlin from contentious remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron that cast doubt over whether Europe would help the U.S. if Beijing invaded its smaller democratic neighbor.“A military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, through which 50 percent of world trade flows every day, would be a horror scenario for the entire world,” Baerbock said at a joint press conference with her Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing.“The shock wave of such a world economic crisis would also hit China and Germany as special trading nations. We are therefore watching the increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait with great concern,” the German foreign minister said. “Conflicts can only be resolved...Police: 2 people shot near St. James Street in Roxbury

That was one of the best days of my career, made a dream come true.“And I remember I got a hit, a double in my first at-bat. It was an unbelievable day and we won that day. It was a pretty special day.”Andrus reached another milestone during the last Chicago White Sox homestand with his 2,000th career hit on April 5 against the San Francisco Giants.“There’s a couple things that come to mind when I think about 2,000 hits: You’ve got to be a pretty damn good baseball player and you’ve got to play for a very long time,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “He’s done both. Can he keep it up for the Chicago Bulls in the next play-in game?

When the Chicago Bulls trailed by 19 points in the opening minutes of Wednesday’s second half against the Toronto Raptors, Zach LaVine knew he was needed. The Raptors spent the entire first half blanketing DeMar DeRozan and crowding the paint with their looming length. The Bulls offense was stalling out, wheels spinning as they failed to keep up at the rim or behind the arc.For most of this season, LaVine had eschewed the idea of “hero ball.” But with less than 24 minutes left in the game — and potentially the season — the Bulls needed a hero. For the rest of the night, LaVine delivered. In two quarters, LaVine delivered the type of performance that garners the maximum contract he signed last summer — scoring 30 points and serving as the engine that kept the Bulls’ postseason hopes alive for at least one more day.“He was assertive, he was aggressive, he was very, very decisive,” coach Billy Donovan said. “When he does that, h...Latest news
