Texans duped into buying stolen vehicles on social media

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Authorities in Central Texas are warning people about an online fraud scheme that is causing people to lose thousands of dollars and their vehicles. The Heart of Texas Auto Theft Task Force said people are being duped into buying stolen vehicles online with cash, and when it is later discovered the vehicle is stolen, the vehicle is also taken away. How the fraud works Lieutenant Howard Stinehour with the Burnet County Sheriff's Office said the online scheme started picking up during the pandemic, when people had trouble buying vehicles at car dealerships. A majority of the stolen vehicles are coming out of the Houston area, Lt. Stinehour explained. He said criminals are easily stealing vehicles because people are leaving their key fob in the car, or simply leaving the car door unlocked. Once the vehicle is stolen, criminals are creating fake I.D. cards and fraudulent car titles by using somebody else's identity. AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department identified a man who was pulled from Lady Bird Lake Saturday, according to a APD news release.At approximately 12:50 p.m., APD officers found the man, who was later identified as Jonathan Honey, 33, in Lady Bird Lake near 10 Rainey Street, the release said.Homicide and Missing Persons Unit Detectives, Lake Patrol Unit, along with Crime Scene Specialists, responded to the scene to investigate, the release said. JEFFERSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- New York State Police are investigating a drowning incident on Saturday at a public lake near TheZone Boys Camp. Police say three people had overturned in the water, and say Juan Parco Saez, 36, of Ecuador, was found dead the following day. On Saturday, around 2:37 p.m., troopers responded to Jefferson for reports of a small boat occupied by three people that was overturned. Multiple local fire departments arrived as well. Two people were rescued and taken to Albany Medical Center. They are in stable condition. The third person, later identified as Parco Saez, was not found after the Under Water Recovery Team (URT) attempted to find him, due to darkness and water conditions. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Schenectady Police are currently investigating a shots fired incident that took place around 5:09 a.m. on Sunday. Police say it appears no one was shot. They responded to Schenectady and Albany Streets where they found 14 shell casings. Through further investigation, police say they found a car that appeared to be hit by a bullet, as well as a house. LOUIS -- Many municipalities in the St. Louis area will be testing their tornado sirens today at 11 a.m. This is part of the regular tests that happen at 11 a.m. on the first Monday of the month.The tests will be happening in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County today. Jefferson County does not have a county-wide tornado siren system, but some cities do conduct monthly tests.
