NATO’s unity will be tested at summit in Vilnius

WASHINGTON (AP) — As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues with no end in sight, NATO’s much-celebrated unity faces fresh strains when leaders gather for their annual summit this week in Vilnius, Lithuania. The world’s biggest security alliance is struggling to reach an agreement on admitting Sweden as its 32nd member. Military spending by member nations still lags behind longstanding goals. And an inability to compromise over who should serve as NATO’s next leader forced an extension of the current secretary general’s term for an extra year.Perhaps most thorny are questions over how Ukraine should be eased into the alliance. Some maintain admitting Ukraine to NATO would be the fulfillment of a promise made years ago and a necessary step to deter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. Others are fearful it would be seen as a provocation that could spiral into an even wider conflict.Bickering among friends is not uncommon, and the current catalogue of disputes pales in ...Spéciale Aix : Remaniement, rachat et rumeurs

A woman headed to the Dorchester Food Co-op on a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon.Store general manager John Santos had some bad news for her: She has to wait a few more weeks for Boston’s only community-owned grocery store to open.Though the trip ended empty handed, a great sense of excitement is building for Dorchester Food Co-op to finally open its doors, which officials anticipate happening by mid August.Sunflowers will greet customers around the parking lot and as they walk through the entrance of the 6,000-square-foot food and pantry hub on the corner of Bowdoin and Topliff streets.A floral section will lead down to cases full of fresh seafood, meats and produce, while a kitchen in the back will cook foods that will be on sale at a cafe featuring a coffee and juice bar. Customers will also be able to take advantage of indoor and outdoor seating. In essence, Dorchester Food Co-op will have the feel of a conventional grocery store. But there’s one major caveat that will make it uniq...Editorial: Put John Kerry on ice

John Kerry’s hush-hush jet-setting days could finally be numbered — and that’s long overdue. The FY24 House State-Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee spending bill includes a prohibition on funding for envoys not authorized by Congress or confirmed by the Senate. That would be Kerry, who has told the Herald he “only” reports to the president.“Over the last several years, we have witnessed a boondoggle of climate change spending, and our bill provides a much-needed course correction in several key areas,” said Subcommittee Chairman Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla.What we’ve also been reporting is Kerry’s abysmal record with Freedom of Information Act requests. His lack of transparency takes elitism to new heights. Now the subcommittee, along with countless others, has had enough. If Kerry is not going to share details with taxpayers about his office staff, his budget should be frozen. It’s basic good economics. Would you pay for any se...MLB Draft Preview: Will Red Sox continue trend of drafting high school shortstops in first round?

When it comes to the MLB Draft, it sure seems like the Red Sox have a type.Since Chaim Bloom took over the front office in late 2019 the Red Sox have drafted a high school shortstop with their first pick in three consecutive drafts. Nick Yorke was Bloom’s first pick at No. 17 overall in 2020, Marcelo Mayer followed at No. 4 in 2021, and last summer Mikey Romero continued the trend at No. 24.All three now rank among the club’s top prospects, and Mayer in particular is regarded as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball. Will the Red Sox make it four in a row at this weekend’s 2023 MLB Draft? Though it might not be a high schooler, history suggests the club will target an infielder at No. 14 overall, or at the very least a position player. That’s a trend that even predates Bloom’s arrival.According to a helpful table compiled by the indispensable @RedSoxStats on Twitter, the Red Sox have paid $1 million or more in bonus money to 11 draft picks since 2018, the ...Heat warnings in place in seven provinces, two territories

VANCOUVER — A rally is to take place in Vancouver today as the strike at British Columbia’s ports stretches into its second week.International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada says the event supporting its workers is expected to include international labour leaders who will call for a negotiated contract settlement with the BC Maritime Employers Association.About 7,400 workers at more than 30 B.C. ports have been on strike since Canada Day over issues including pay and provisions related to maintenance work, contracting out and automation. The two sides were back at the negotiating table Saturday, supported by federal mediators, after talks stalled on Monday.Employers say they proposed a committee and independent arbitrator to make recommendations related to key sticking points around maintenance work, but that the union rejected the idea.Business organizations and some politicians have publicly called for the federal government to bring in back-to-work legislation but Labo...Daily horoscope for July 9, 2023

DEAR ABBY: I have been struggling with my estrangement from my brother. He’s the only real family member I have.We were extremely close until three years ago. To my knowledge, I have done nothing wrong. He quit speaking to me after I bought some property he may have been interested in.We are both in our mid-20s, and he has since gotten married and had two children. Being excluded from his life hurts me deeply. We have to work together daily, and it’s stressful having to encounter him because he goes out of his way to be rude and put me down.Must I accept that this is how our relationship will be forever?DEJECTED IN ILLINOISDEAR DEJECTED: If there is one life lesson I have learned, it is that interpersonal problems cannot be solved without communication.
