Ellen Moynihan, Leonard Greene | New York Daily News (TNS)For years, she wouldn’t admit it. For years after that, she wouldn’t even discuss it.Even thinking about what happened to her family and community felt like a crime punishable by more death and destruction.Over time, Viola Ford Fletcher began to tell her story. How much time? Fletcher is 109 years old, and next month — on Independence Day — Fletcher is releasing a new book chronicling one of the ugliest moments in American history.Fletcher was 7 years old in 1921 when a deadly and shameful race riot broke out in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a heinous act of violence that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Black people over the span of 18 hours.“I saw and heard people screaming and running and falling, houses burning, guns shooting,” Fletcher said during a Midtown interview with the New York Daily News. “And the rushing of Black people out of town before most of us was killed.”Viola Ford Fletcher is pictured during an interview Wednesd...‘My heart is broken’: Fremont man gets 40 years to life for ‘straight-up cold-blooded’ murder

DUBLIN — A Fremont man was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for second-degree murder, but not until after he heard from a long line of his victim’s friends and family, including the victim’s young daughter who lamented the loss of “my best friend in the whole world.”Kamalpreet Singh, 30, was sentenced May 18 by Judge Paul Delucchi, who called Singh a cold-blooded killer and a liar beforehand. Singh was convicted in April of murdering 32-year-old Anthony Garza in an April 2020 shooting at the Mowry East Shopping Center in Fremont. He had confessed to the crime but argued at trial that his employer was responsible for everything.Family and friends of Garza spoke at length during the hearing, describing Garza as a deeply religious man who worked with at-risk youth and was planning to wed the mother of his daughter. Garza’s mother, siblings, friends, pastor, and daughter all spoke or submitted letters to Delucchi.“I miss his homemade chic...Earthquake felt near Pacifica Monday morning

BRUSSELS (AP) — The Belgian press already calls it “Courtoisgate.”And new Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco says learning about it was a shock. Thibaut Courtois’ decision to leave Belgium’s training camp ahead of a European Championship qualifier for not being selected as captain plunged the squad into crisis mode on Monday, only six months after its pitiful exit from the World Cup.Courtois abruptly left camp and will miss the match in Estonia on Tuesday apparently because he doesn’t feel he’s recognized for his true worth.“I’m still surprised and shocked of course, because we did not expect that something like this can happen,” Tedesco said in Estonia.Courtois, who played on Saturday in the 1-1 draw against Austria, was disappointed with Tedesco’s handling of the captaincy. In the absence of midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who was injured in the Champions League final, Tedesco gave the captaincy to striker Romelu Lukaku, who responded by scoring Belgium&...Norrie launches Queen’s Club bid with 1st-round win and Musetti also through
