Morocco is the first Arab or North African nation to go beyond the group stage at the Women’s World Cup, and the only one of eight tournament newcomers to advance.Morocco’s winning goal came in first-half stoppage time, when Anissa Lahmari put back a penalty-save rebound. The win meant Morocco qualifies in second place in the group, behind Colombia, and knocking two-time champion Germany out of the tournament. No. 2-ranked Germany needed a win over South Korea in a game being played simultaneously in Brisbane, but was held to a 1-1 draw.If Morocco’s qualification for the Women’s World Cup inspired a generation, this will cement the legacy of the Atlas Lionesses. The Moroccans were trounced 6-0 by Germany in their debut game in the tournament, but bounced back with consecutive wins over South Korea and a Colombia team that had been gr...

Central Florida is a hot spot for leprosy, report says (CNN) — When a 54-year-old landscaper came into an Orlando dermatology clinic with a splotchy, painful rash, Dr. Rajiv Nathoo took five or six biopsies. The rash was spreading from the man’s limbs to his face, but previous doctors had been stumped by what was causing it.The biopsy results confirmed Nathoo’s hunch, a diagnosis he described as something “you read in your textbooks”: leprosy. However, the man didn’t have the obvious risk factors that most doctors would expect with the hard-to-catch infection. So after noticing a cluster of other cases in the area, Nathoo, a dermatologist and complex clinic director for Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Clinics in Orlando, began to suspect that Central Florida could be an unexpected leprosy hotbed. Now, his team is cautioning other health care providers to be on the lookout for similar cases in the area.According a research letter published by Nathoo and his colleagues in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, Ce...

Drive a Lada, Putin tells Russian business chiefs Foreign cars are out; Russian motors are in. That was the message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to officials Thursday during a meeting with the heads of manufacturing businesses, reported state-run news agency TASS.“Ministries, agencies, and the administration of affairs have asked to continue [purchases], to emphasize, in fact, foreign-made cars, to continue this practise,” Putin said. “I said that this should be absolutely excluded and all officials of the country should drive domestic cars.” Russia’s car market has suffered in recent years, hurt under the weight of sanctions and international companies pulling out of the market. Carmakers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan have all suspended work in Russia because of the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine, leaving more space in the market for Russian brands.Moving to driving domestic cars will be “more modest than before,” Putin admitted, but he said that it’s a good thing.“All of our officia...

Sudbury police investigating pair of recent break-ins Police were investigating in Sudbury this week after two break-ins at local homes that may be part of a larger trend, police said. Police in a statement said the break-ins happened within a 48-hour span before 12 p.m. Wednesday on Twin Pond Lane and Cudworth Lane. Police said both homes belong to people of Indian descent who were away on vacation. In both cases, police said evidence suggests people involved entered the homes through second floor windows. While police said residential break-ins “are infrequent” in Sudbury, police also said there has been an increase in the region in similar incidents. “This is consistent with an on-going residential break-in investigation, where often the victims are of South Asian and/or Indian descent,” police said. Sudbury police have asked anyone who recently saw suspicious activity in either the Twin Pond Lane or Cudworth Lane areas to contact detectives.
