Left to Die Breathes Life into Death

Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 12:49:05 GMT

Left to Die Breathes Life into Death Left to Die Breathes Life into Death: Back in March, we reviewed a show at the Belasco featuring a band called Death to All. That band includes three former members of Floridian death metal pioneers Death in its ranks — drummer Gene Hoglan, bassist Steve DiGiorgio and guitarist Bobby Koelble. Death mainman Chuck Schuldiner died in 2001 of brain cancer at the way-too-young age of 34, and Death to All helps to keep his music alive by playing it in front of a lot of people, very well.As it happens though, they’re not the only Death tribute featuring former members. This Saturday at the Echo, Left to Die played an immense set that included every track from 1988’s bonafide classic Leprosy album, as well a few from the also immense Scream Bloody Gore debut. The band features Death men Rick Rozz (guitar) and Terry Butler (bass, now of Obituary), both of whom are credited on Leprosy, although according to Wiki, Butler didn’t actually play on the album. No matter, the...

Most school shootings in U.S. aren’t mass killings, study finds, and they’re often driven by community violence

Most school shootings in U.S. aren’t mass killings, study finds, and they’re often driven by community violence By Amanda Musa | CNNMany Americans think of school shootings as mass casualty events involving an adolescent with an assault-style weapon. But a new study says that most recent school shootings orchestrated by teenagers do not fit that image — and they are often related to community violence. The study, published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, analyzed 253 school shootings carried out by 262 adolescents in the US between 1990 and 2016.It found that these adolescents were responsible for only a handful of mass casualty shootings, defined as those involving four or more gunshot fatalities. About half of the shootings analyzed — 119 — involved at least one death. Among the events, seven killed four or more people.A majority of the shootings analyzed also involved handguns rather than assault rifles or shotguns, and they were often the result of “interpersonal disputes,” according to the researchers from University of South Carolina and University of Florida.“When you look at gun...

Pac-12 power ratings: Should UCLA fire Chip Kelly? That’s asking the wrong question

Pac-12 power ratings: Should UCLA fire Chip Kelly? That’s asking the wrong question The coaching carousel, motionless across the Pac-12 footprint during the regular season, began to spin Saturday morning when Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith accepted an offer from Michigan State. Will the next turn come in Westwood?UCLA coach Chip Kelly’s job security is the subject of intense speculation following a listless loss to Cal, which followed (by two weeks) a dreadful performance against Arizona State. However, a decisive victory at USC in between those defeats seemingly complicates the situation.Kelly’s tenure started poorly in 2018 but gained steam following the pandemic. However, with the Bruins on the brink of a move to the Big Ten, momentum is lost. While Kelly has posted a 24-13 overall record the past three years, his success leans into a slew of second-tier victories inside and outside conference play. This fall, for example, the Bruins beat just two teams with winning records: Coastal Carolina and USC.It’s tough to make the case the program is ...

Chiefs finally play clean game as offense comes alive in second half against Raiders KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Perhaps the Kansas City Chiefs finally solved their second-half woes against the Raiders on Sunday in Las Vegas.Or maybe they just did what Andy Reid has been imploring them to do for the past month.Despite falling behind by two touchdowns early, the Chiefs were able to rally for a 31-17 win largely because they committed just four penalties and were turnover-free for the first time since Week 5 and the second time all season. The result was an offense led by Patrick Mahomes that started to resemble their high-scoring teams of the past five years.“We’ve shown that we can move the ball,” Mahomes said, “but penalties and drops, and me not getting to the right guy at the right time (were problems). … Little things have kind of stalled our drives, but we got to it. Kind of went back to fundamentals this week, and we kept pressing and pushing, and we’re going to try to keep going the rest of the season.”While the offense finally came online...
